English translation

For people who have lived in several places, “Where are you from?” may be harder than it seems. Leila grew up in one city, studied in another and established her family in a third. With new people she often gave a short answer, although no single place described her life. A writing group asked her to describe somewhere she felt at home. She wrote not only about a country or city but a kitchen, a particular smell and conversations with trusted people. She realised belonging could connect to relationships and actions, not only geography. Yet places still mattered. Language, landscape and experiences from different periods shaped her self-understanding. Leila began using several descriptions of her background. She did not need to choose one story for others to be valid. A simple category can help in a brief conversation but be insufficient for understanding a complex life.
